Is That You, Samuel Tilden?

The photo below was taken  in the main branch of the New York Public Library.  We see a portrait of Samuel Tilden, a 19th-century governor of New York State who won the popular vote in the US presidential election, but who was denied the presidency because of the electoral college system and backroom dealings.  Next to the portrait, we see a blue orb.
