An Astonishing Progression
Photo date: October 30, 2018. Photographer: Mark Mahin.
Below is a series of photos I took today while photographing nothing but ordinary water drops falling against a dark background. We will see an incredibly weird progression in which first we see no orb holes, then we see 1 hole per orb, then we see two holes per orb, then we see one hole per orb, and then we see no orb holes.
The first photo taken at 3:32 PM showed orbs with no holes.
A later photo taken at 3:32 PM showed orbs with one hole.
A later photo taken at 3:35 PM shows a weird kind of "half appearing orbs" effect.
A later photo taken at 3:37 PM shows orbs with two holes.
A later photo taken at 3:38 PM also shows orbs with two holes, and now the smaller hole is farther from the edge of the orbs. You can see through two of the holes.
A later photo taken at 3:40 PM also shows orbs with two holes, but now the second hole is much smaller.
This "increase and then decrease" effect with the orb holes is an effect you should never expect to see, even if you photograph falling water drops a thousand times. I do not get any such effect on most of the times I photograph falling water drops.

A Most Improbable Case of Phantom Dialing
In my post "Four 'Phantom Phone Calls' in One Hour," I reported on a case in which my phone -- seemingly by itself -- dialed one of my daughters twice and my wife twice, all in the same hour. Last night there was an equally astonishing case of this kind of "phantom dialing."
Checking the "Dialed calls" log on my humble old-fashioned cell phone, I was astonished to see three different calls to the same number went out from my phone last night between 9:35 PM and 9:36 PM. At this time I was in the subway, and the cell phone was in my pocket. All three calls went out to the following number:
54888881888888888888880007000**008888888888888888888988888848888888
My phone has an Auto-redial feature, but it has always been turned off.
What happens if I try typing a nonsense number like this using my phone? I get a message on my phone saying the number cannot be reached. I then see a "Rejected" message on my phone:
The phone then automatically returns to the Default screen, shown below:
Now, we might be able to explain one such case of "phantom dialing" occurring at some particular time, under some hypothesis of random presses of the keys in my pocket (which could conceivably occur if something else in my pocket was rubbing against the keys). But how do we explain three calls to this incredibly long number during the same two minutes?
It would at first seem that such a thing could not possibly occur by chance, as there would only be a microscopic chance of three very long random numbers all being the same. We might be able to explain it if my Auto-redial feature was on. But that feature has always been "off" on my phone.
And there is no key on my phone that will automatically dial the last number dialed.
I can redial the last number called on my phone by using a very specific trio of button presses:
(1) First I can press the bar above the OK button to bring up my Call History.
(2) Then I can press OK.
(3) Then I can press OK again.
But given 21 possible button presses I can make on my phone, the chance of such an exact sequence occurring twice in a row (due to random presses on my phone) seems microscopic, something like 1 in 21 to the sixth power, which is about 1 in 85,766,121. This is merely the latest in a long and baffling series of spooky events you can read about in this set of posts.

A Spooky Event Involving an Afterlife Site
Today I noticed three spooky things happening. The first is my Samsung tablet displayed a site dealing with life after death as the only tab in a web browser, even though I have not intentionally visited that site in several days.
I had used my Samsung tablet earlier in the afternoon, and then switched to a laptop for about an hour. Upon shutting down the laptop and going back to the Samsung tablet, I saw (after passing through a password screen) that my Firefox web browser was showing as its only tab the site www.survivaltop40.com. Having not visited this "life after death" site in several days, I was very surprised by this.
The relevant facts are as follows:
(1) I had not intentionally visited the site www.survivaltop40.com in about four or five days.
(2) Since last turning on the Samsung tablet (which I do about 8 times a day for performance reasons), I had not visited any site related to life after death, any site that might have had a link to the site www.survivaltop40.com. Turning off the tablet always closes any web browser that was open.
(3) My web browser was set to use www.google.com as the home page, and that was still the same after the www.survivaltop40.com site mysteriously popped up.
(4) My web browser does not have any active setting by which previously visited sites are restored. Whenever I start up my Samsung tablet and click on the Firefox icon, I get only a page showing links to my most recently viewed sites, but www.survivaltop40.com was not on that list.
(5) I had made a bookmark to the site www.survivaltop40.com about 4 or 5 days ago, but it was something like #258 out of 262 bookmarks in my list of my bookmarks, and there is no way I could have accidentally activated such a bookmark.
There are no other cases I can recall using my Samsung tablet in which I ever saw a site that I had not intentionally chosen to use in days as the only tab on my web browser. All in all, I have no explanation for how this "life after death" site could have appeared as the only tab on my browser.
Two other spooky things happened tonight. A broom that had been resting against the wall in the kitchen came crashing to the ground minutes after anyone had been in the kitchen, and hours after anyone had used the broom. Then after I went to Manhattan and returned, I saw that my sound machine had apparently switched channels on its own. I always keep the machine running on the "Waterfall" channel, but when I returned I found it was now on the "Rain forest" channel. I asked whether anyone else in the apartment had switched the channel, but neither of the two others in my apartment said they had switched the channel.
Postscript: Something similar happened a few days later. I found that my browser had a tab that displayed a book about life after death, a book by Arthur Conan Doyle. I had no memory of bringing up that site on that day, only a memory of finishing reading the book several days earlier.
Post-postscript: Something similar happened on December 31, 2018. I found that my browser had a tab displaying a book about life after death, the book "The Survival of Man" by Oliver Lodge. But I had no memory of bringing up that page. I had a browser bookmark referring to the page, but it was buried deep in my list of bookmarked pages (something like bookmark number 389 of 450), and I hadn't been looking through my bookmarks in the hours before I saw the page.

Spooky Occurrences
Regular readers of this blog may have some read of my previous accounts of many spooky things happening around my living quarters. Here are a few more that happened in recent days.
(1) Looking at the "Dialed Calls" part of my phone log, I noticed another "phantom phone call" dialed from my phone, one requiring eight button presses on my phone. The call occurred while the phone was in my pocket, untouched. Also, the phone seemed to turn off by itself today, even though well charged (the same thing has happened with my Samsung tablet).
(2) I was looking for my phone, and couldn't find it. Then I saw it on a windowsill of my apartment. I have no memory of ever putting any phone on any windowsill during my lifetime.
(3) I was very surprised to see the background image on my Windows desktop suddenly change to be a photo I had taken days ago. I have no memory of ever choosing to make such a change. The photo was a dull photo I would never have selected as a desktop background.
(4) During one or two days in the past week, my sound machine (which can create white noise or natural sounds) would repeatedly turn off by itself. Normally when this happens a time will continue displaying on the front, and I can get the machine to resume making sound by pressing the Power button. But one night the sound stopped coming from the machine, and there was no longer a time shown on the front. The machine seemed to be "dead." I pulled out the adapter plug, and put it back in to the back of the machine. There was still no sound and no time displayed. I assumed I would never be able to use the machine again. But the next day when I tried plugging it back in to another outlet, it worked fine; and it also worked fine when I plugged it back into the first outlet I was using it with. The machine has worked without problem the past few days.
(5) I will very often be looking at a web site when suddenly my browser will go to a random page on that web site, even though I never clicked on a link to that page. This often happens five or ten seconds after I haven't touched anything with my finger or mouse. This happens even on sites (such as my own sites) where I know there is no unusual programming that might cause such a thing.
(6) When I woke up Monday morning, alone in my apartment, I saw a broom in a corner of my living room, but without the broom pan used with that broom. I'm sure the broom wasn't there when I went to bed the previous night (I being the last in the apartment to go to bed). The broom and broom pan are normally kept in the kitchen. Thinking this was rather odd, on Monday evening I asked each of the three other people living in my apartment (my wife and two daughters) whether they had used the broom in the morning. Each of them denied having used the broom on Monday morning. So the broom's appearance in this corner is baffling.
In two of these cases there is what could be a kind of "object displacement" effect similar to what I described here.
The events described here are only the latest in a long series of similar events I have reported, often involving devices turning off or turning on by themselves, or seemingly changing their state or position by themselves, as if some invisible presence was at work.
People have a few stereotyped ideas about ways in which a spiritual presence might make itself known in our world. Most of us have heard about the ideas of a haunted house (in which a ghost or "cold presence" is repeatedly seen or felt), the idea of a poltergeist (in which a spirit violently tosses things about), and the idea of a seance in which spirits are called forth. But perhaps those are only some of many ways in which an invisible presence might make itself known. Let us imagine that spirits can observe our world at will, briefly passing into any home they wish. They might be able to produce physical and electrical effects, and may choose to do so occasionally, perhaps more often to anyone who has expressed interest in seeing such anomalies. My natural tendency is to explain away non-photographic anomalous things I see about my home, but so many anomalies have piled up that it gets hard to continue doing that.
