An Orb Above a Dying Female's Face

 The book "Automatic Or Spirit Writing: With Other Psychic Experiences" by Sara A. Underwood is an interesting account of the paranormal, one that can be read online free using the link here. On page 35 Sara gives this account of witnessing the death of a friend:

"Slowly over the dying one's face spread a mellow radiant mist — I know no other way to describe it. In a few moments it covered the dying face as with a veil, and spread in a circle of about a foot beyond, over the pillow, the strange yellowish white light all the more distinct from the partial darkness of the room. Then from the center of this, immediately over the hidden face, appeared an apparently living face with smiling eyes which looked directly into mine, gazing at me with a look so full of comforting assurance that I could scarcely feel frightened. But it was so real and so strange that I wondered if I were temporarily crazed, and as it disappeared I called some one from another room, and went out into the open air for a few moments to recover myself under the midnight stars. When I was sure of myself I returned and took my place again alone. Then I asked that, if that appearance were real and not an hallucination, would it be made once more manifest to me ; and again the phenomenon was repeated, and the kind, smiling face looked up at me — a face new to me yet wondrously familiar."

Lid Levitation?

 I continue to observe at irregular intervals spooky things happening where I live. You can read quite a few posts I have made about such events by using the link here.  A few days ago my Simplisafe home alarm device acted strangely. Whenever I turn off the alarm in the morning, I get a recorded voice saying, "Alarm off." But a few days ago when I turned off the alarm, the voice simply said, "Alarm." 

 I also get unpredictable results from recharging electronic devices overnight. I recharge my laptop computer and my I-Pad overnight. In the morning I often find them with random levels of charge, anything from 100% to nearly 0%. 

This morning something very strange happened in my bathroom. After using the toilet, I left the bathroom, and at about the moment I got to my bed, I heard a loud recognizable noise. It was the sound of the toilet lid falling down from a raised position. At first I thought, "I must have just somehow positioned the lid so that it might fall down about five seconds later."  But I did tests in the morning showing that such an explanation does not work. 

Tests I did showed there are only 4 possible "lid states" of the toilet:

(1) A "both lids up" state that is stable.

(2) A "both lids down" state that is stable.

(3) A "lower lid down and upper lid up" state that is stable. 

(4) Some state in which either lid is neither fully up nor fully down,  which is an extremely unstable state that will always cause that lid to fall down within one second. 

So how could the toilet lid have loudly fallen down in an empty bathroom about five seconds after I had left the bathroom? There seems to be no natural explanation.  It was as if the toilet lid had briefly levitated. 

In the 19th century a host of witnesses would report levitations in their house. The most common report would be of table levitations.  Endless seance witnesses would report tables either rising on two legs or fully levitating in the air.  Very many times witnesses would report no one was touching the table when such events occurred. Such observations seeming to indicate spirit manifestations have been senselessly censored from the pages of this century's history books and science books.  You can read many accounts of such observations (often reported simultaneously by three or more named witnesses) in my  "Spookiest Years" series  (here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here,  here, here and here and here).

Orb-Notified of Her Mother's Death?

 The British medium Gladys Osborne Leonard achieved successes so remarkable that she is sometimes called "the British Leonora Piper," a reference to a medium whose successes are described here.  Gladys stated that she was visiting friends while her mother was sick, and Gladys awoke at 2 AM:

"I looked up and saw in front of me, but about five feet above the level of my body, a large, circular patch of light about four feet in diameter. In this light I saw my mother quite distinctly.  Her face looked several years younger than I had seen it a few hours before. A pink flush of health was on her cheeks, her eyes were clear and shining, and a smile of utter happiness was on her lips. She gazed downward on me for a moment, seeming to convey to me an intense feeling of relief and a sense of safety and well-being. Then the vision faded. I was awake all the time, quite conscious of my surroundings."

The next day she found her mother had died at 2 AM. 

Another Day, Another Spooky Event

 My previous post describes some spooky events I witnessed over the weekend. Today there was another spooky event.  I was running a normal load (80% full) on my late model high-quality General Electric washing machine (which still has 8 years left on its warranty), when the machine simply froze at the "two minutes left" mark in the countdown. After about five minutes of the machine frozen in such a state, I had to turn off its power and remove the clothes.  I noticed that the spin cycle never occurred. In this case I have proof of this spooky event, in the video below that shows the machine frozen for three minutes at the "two minutes left" mark.  The video is not very exciting viewing, but at least it is good to have some video proof of one of the spooky events I have been reporting recently (which have occurred in great variety). 

Postscript:  On April 11 there was another spooky event. One of my daughters was surprised to find that a kitchen closet was locked. The door had a handle that can be locked by turning a knob 90 degrees, but no one would ever do that (unless they were trying to hide inside the closet).  Here we have a kind of "Other Side" symbolism, as if the knob had turned 90 degrees from the other side of the door. Luckily when this type of door is locked it can be opened from the outside using a butter knife. 

An Apport?

Just after mentioning that today was the 100th birthday of my late mother, I found this quarter mysteriously lying on a bedspread I had laid out a few minutes earlier without seeing such a thing. Massachusetts was her home state.

This is only one of innumerable spooky things I have seen regarding coins. You can read of many more at my post here. The incidents include a case in which I saw a coin roll up from behind me, rolling on its edge, when I was alone in an apartment.  

Records of seances include very many cases in which people seemed to see things that appeared "out of nowhere." The technical term for such things is: an apport.

Postscript: There were two other spooky things on the same day, both involving electricity. In the second one, at the end of the day I saw a green light in a bathroom mysteriously turn off for a second or two before turning on again.  Today (April 7) I also saw something very weird. I ran my microwave oven for two minutes to heat up some pizza. It made a normal "microwave running" sound during this time. When I opened it up, I found the plate and the pizza were cold, just as if no heating had occurred. On the second try, the plate and pizza heated up as expected.  I can never recall getting such an effect. The microwave is a fairly recent model, one with no spinning plate. 

Post-postscript: On April 9 I saw something very weird that had a kind of "apport vibe" to it. On my first look out the window I noticed a bagel about 15 feet above the ground, on a tree right in front of the house where I live. A few minutes later the bagel was devoured by a squirrel.  Below are photos of what I saw. 

I can imagine a squirrel carrying a bagel high up a tree. But what are the odds that it would then leave the bagel up in a tree, without even taking a decent bite out of it when the bagel was first carried up into the tree?

Sky Sight Reminds Me of an Orb Pattern

 Below we see on the left a photo I took today. It shows a strange sight in the sky.  The main band stretched from one horizon to the opposite horizon.  The pattern reminds me of an "inverted Y" pattern that I have got more than 10 times in mysterious orbs I photographed. On the right are some of the examples of this pattern. You can see similar photos by looking at my post here, which shows this pattern and many other repeating orb patterns. 

The inverted Y is said to be a symbol for God, although the two sources I found saying that failed to provide references backing up the claim. 

2017: Year of the Big Blue Orbs

Below is a retrospective look at some photos I took of mysterious orbs that were big and blue.  The photos were all taken in clean and dry air with no visible signs of precipitation.

A Series of Spooky Events

 I observe at irregular intervals mysterious events that seem beyond any physical explanation. Last week there were several:

(1) As described here, minutes after I turned off a PlayStation device, it inexplicably turned on (the TV remote being an arm's length away and the controller being two meters away). 

(2) The next day, February 29, as described in the same post, two hours after I turned off a PlayStation device, it inexplicably turned on (the TV remote being an arm's length away and the controller being two meters away). 

(3) The next day, March 1, as described in the same post,  the ceiling smoke detector in the room I was in lit up and started making loud noises, as it might have done if I had pressed its circular button (although I did no such thing).  There was no vapor or smoke in the room that can explain this.  

(4) The next day, March 2, a green light in the bathroom mysteriously turned off for a second before turning on. 

This morning another spooky event occurred. I was standing an arm's length away from the tube shown below, which was in a  position like that shown below, on the rim of a sink. I had not touched the tube in more than an hour. Suddenly I hear a noise. I was not looking at the tube, but I now saw it on the floor. I tested whether dropping the tube from the sink would create a sound just like the sound I heard. It did make exactly such a sound. 

Somehow the tube had fallen to the ground when it was an arm's length away from me. How could that have happened?  I can think of only one natural explanation: conceivably the last time I put the tube on the sink I could have put it by chance in a position so balanced on the edge that the tube might by chance fall to the ground more than an hour later. This would require accidental balancing about as improbable as dropping a coin so that it lands on its edge. This analogy reminds me of the time I once saw a coin rolling up from behind me, on its edge, when I was alone in an apartment (as discussed here). 

Prediction: I will before long have more spooky events to report. 

Why might such an item be chosen as part of a spirit sign? On its left is a green arrow pointing upward, with the words "Up & up."  What would happen if a soul were to leave a body? It might go "up and up."

Postscript: While I had this post displaying on my laptop computer, with that computer on a coffee table an arm's length from me, I noticed the screen very noticeably flickered for a second. 

Today (March 9) I saw something spooky-looking. I nearly-closed the heavy back door of the house where I live, leaving the door halfway in the door frame, which should have been enough to prevent it from blowing open (given wind speeds at the time of only about 10 miles per hour). But the door then opened about 8 inches when no one was touching it.  I felt no gust of wind that might explain this. 

Post-postscript: Today (March 15) besides seeing three spooky incidents involving lights, I three times saw the tube shown above falling from the front rim of my sink to the bottom of my sink (the drain hole),  long after I had touched the tube. I can't explain any of these events, other than the idea I just happened to previously place the tube so precariously that it might fall many seconds later.  The chance of that happening three times in one day seems microscopic. 

I then thought to myself: I will start keeping the tube on the bigger back rim of the sink.  That back rim is about the length of the tube, as you can see in the photo below. It seemed the first six times I attempted to place the tube on the back rim of the sink, each time it fell to the bottom of the sink, to the drain hole. This occurred in  eight out of ten attempts, despite me having good precise muscle skills that I require for typing the posts of this blog.  While I was taking the photo below, the circuit breaker of the bathroom inexplicably went off, causing the bathroom to lose power, and requiring me to press the button on the GFCI outlet to restore power.  There was nothing plugged in the GFCI outlet, no mist in the bathroom, no water in the sink, and nothing I can think of that can explain the power in the bathroom shutting off. 

It seems I predicted correctly when I predicted that I would soon have more spooky things to report. 

Post-post postscript: Today (March 16) about 40 minutes ago I was cooking spaghetti and had the stove fan running, as I always do when using any of the gas burners. I was standing right in front of a gas burner, below the buttons and light shown below, and my head was at least eight inches away from such buttons (which are directly above the front burners). Suddenly the sound of the fan stopped. I looked up and saw the green light had gone off.  I was worried that the fan had "died," having had in my life two or three times when fans stopped running and then never could be turned back on. But upon pressing one of the  buttons, the fan and the green light turned back on.  The fan on this stove has the quirk that you can only turn off the fan and the green light by pressing the button on the far right two times in quick succession.  But no visible person had done that. I was alone at home at the time. 

Post-post-post postscript: Today (March 24) I observed a spooky event regarding my TV set. Five minutes after I had just started to watch the first episode of a TV series on HBO Max, my TV reverted back to an HBO Max startup screen. There's a way to get something like this by pressing a particular button on the TV remote, but the TV remote was an arm's length away. The strange event occurred at the exact moment I was typing the word "synchronicity" while writing about how people may have experiences they regard as evidence of some mysterious invisible agency, in a post dealing with ghosts and apparitions.

Were the Australian Mystery Lights Caused by Orbs?

 In 2012 NASA released a light map of planet Earth made from observations by an orbiting satellite. The map was made from data acquired over nine days in April 2012 and 13 days in October 2012. Most continents appeared as expected. For example, the map of the United States showed many lights around the heavily populated east coast, but not much light around the Rocky Mountains, where much fewer people live.

But the light map had one big surprise: there were many lights shown over the eastern half of western Australia. The eastern half of western Australia has little population. So how could there be all these lights coming from such a sparsely populated area?  In my 2015 post here I discuss how a NASA "burn map" discredits the explanation that the lights were caused by vegetation fires. 

The very interesting TV show "What on Earth?" which can be seen on HBO Max deals mostly with anomalies that show up in satellite photos. One episode partially deals with the Australian mystery lights (Season 1, episode 6).  Below is a photo of my TV screen at the moment the program was discussing the strange lights.  Few people live in the area with most of the lights we see below.

At the 36 minutes left mark in the episode, we have an interview with an aboriginal Australian named Francis who suggests an explanation.  He recalls seeing several times what the Australians call "min min lights."  The narrator says this:  "For centuries, aboriginal peoples have told stories of bright hovering lights in Australia; they're known as min min lights."

Francis gives this eyewitness account:

"This light would appear from -- it seems from out of nowhere, I can't explain it. But it was a shimmering ball of fire-like substance. It would dance through the trees to its own rhythm, it would seem. It would hover there and shimmer and then PHEW it was gone." 

The narrator tells us that there have been thousands of reports of these mysterious "min min lights," and that "eyewitnesses report seeing glowing orbs in the sky." The episode gives us no preferred explanation of the cause of the lights shown on the screen above, leaving the matter as one of its many unsolved mysteries.

An Australian news article says this about this topic:

"The lights have been described by witnesses as floating, fast-moving balls of colour that glow in the night sky...Sometimes the lights are blue and other times they are white or yellow.

In Queensland, the Boulia Shire Council notifies visitors 'in the interest of tourism' that they are in the land of the Min Min lights and that they may spot them as they drive for the next 120 kilometres....Some Aboriginal people believe the Min Min lights are the spirits of elders."

A Hotspot for Orbs and Bigfoot?

We have in today's Daily Mail an article with the title "Mystery of Massachusetts' 'Monsterland' - a five-mile stretch of unchartered woods where locals claim they've seen flying saucers, glowing orange orbs and BIG FOOT."  The article is about a wooded area near Leominster, Massachusetts in the USA. We have a video interview with a Bigfoot investigator. At the 2:10 mark in the video the man says, "We witnessed a ball of light change and turn into two eyes...and then become basically this eight-foot shadow that ran in front of us." 

We read this:

"Claims of apelike creatures, humanoid footprints, and car engines suddenly giving out are now rife - with several, including Le Blanc, spotting strange orbs floating overhead.

He believes the latter and the at-large beast are indelibly linked, citing other reports of people actually spotting the monster holding these 'orange spheres'.

Different objects described as 'flying saucers' have also been reported, with some caught on camera.

Le Blanc suspects they are all related, and claims to have witnessed the floating orbs at least nine times over the years. 

Several other sightings have been reported since, including one on July 3 of 2012, and another almost ten years later on April 13, 2022.

Both occurrences were caught on camera, and the orbs in each are eerily identical. 

All the more alarming is that the strange orange objects - reminiscent even from afar of fireballs - fit the descriptions of countless Leominster residents over the decades, including several whom have spoke to Le Blanc.

'People have seen Bigfoot holding an orb,' he told the outlet during a tour through  the area in 2022. 'They look like a basketball with plasma swirling around and they’re silent. I've just seen them hovering over the sky and just blink out and disappear.' "

Globe-Shaped Ghost?

 At the site www.adcrp.org we have in the Publications section several interesting documents. One is entitled "Investigation of the phenomenology and impact of spontaneous and direct After-Death Communications (ADCs)."  We have quite an interesting document that can be read here.  It's a document based on a large survey of people reporting "After Death Communication." On page 13 we read that 46% claimed to have a mysterious sighting of a deceased person.  These visual experiences varied.  On page 17 we read this section:

"Apparitions are sometimes surrounded by light. We asked if the deceased seemed brighter than their environment, in other words, if a light surrounded them or came from them. This was the case for just over a third of our sample. 

 For 34.7% apparition surrounded by light, 11.2% unsure, and for 54.0% apparition not surrounded by light. Here are some examples of luminous apparitions:

•  “It looked like a photo of her surrounded by a circle of sun rays.”
•  “Light filled body.”
•  “Globe of light."

The next page has this interesting part:

"We have asked those surveyed how the deceased appeared to them.  For 59.8% apparition already there when perceived, for 28.5% materializing right before their eyes, and 11.8% unsure. We enquired how the apparition disappeared.  For 14.4% fading gradually, for 28.1% dissolving instantly, for 18.0% not there anymore when experient blinked, 10.9% unsure, and 28.5% other."

Can You Know in a Dream Some Fact You Never Learned When Awake?

 Last night I had one of my endless dreams in which deceased people appear. It was the third dream I have had about the late actress Betty White. Other famous deceased people have appeared more often (such as Ronald Reagan, who has appeared in eleven different dreams).  My dream was very simple: Betty White had discovered that she was romantically desired by Allen Ludden, the host of the long-running TV game show "Password." In my dream Betty rejected Allen, saying that she was not interested. 

After I awoke I thought this was a strange dream to have, because I remembered the two had been married. The two were married for 17 years, until Allen's death from cancer in 1980. Looking up a biography of Allen Ludden on Wikipedia,  I read the following: "He proposed to Betty White, whom he had met on Password, at least twice before she accepted."  So my dream of Betty White rejecting Allen Ludden's romantic overture matched an event that twice happened in real life. But I never learned of so obscure a fact while awake (until this morning, after I had the dream). 

Postscript: On March 2, 2024 I had another dream making me ask the same question posed in this post's title. In my dream I saw an animal in a tree, and I guessed that it was a koala. But then someone said, "No, it's a marmoset." When I awoke and wrote down the dream, I could not recall what a marmoset was. Even after waking up in the morning, I still could not recall anything about the word "marmoset," although I had a suspicion that it was some kind of animal. I looked up the term, and found that a marmoset was a kind of monkey. In the dream the reference made sense, because marmosets are tree-dwellers.  It was just as if in the dream I knew that the marmoset is a tree-dwelling animal, but I did not know any such thing when awaking after having the dream.  I can never recall speaking the word "marmoset," nor can I ever hear reading about such a topic before having the dream.

Another Event That Was Like an Invisible Presence Pressing a Button

This morning, about 30 minutes ago,  my Playstation machine inexplicably turned on by itself.

The machine is set up so that every time I turn on the power going to the TV and the Playstation machine, the Playstation always turns on two minutes after turning on the power. This morning after waking up, I did what I always do in the morning: after turning on the power,  I turned off the Playstation, and selected a TV program to watch. The TV program I selected this morning was Fringe, which I am in the middle of binge-watching.  

After about  five or ten minutes of the TV running this program Fringe, my Playstation inexplicably turned on, while I was sitting on a sofa two meters away, with no one else in the room. This has never happened in the nearly two years I have lived at this location.  The Playstation has a turn on button on its front, and its controller was resting on top of the machine, under the TV screen. The event reminds me of an event I recorded on January 29. When that January 29 event occurred, it was just as if some invisible presence had pressed the Test button on the GFCI button in my bathroom, causing the circuit to turn off with a loud click noise. Similarly, the inexplicable-seeming event I describe here (occurring last year) was just like what would have happened if an invisible presence had pressed the Test button on a smoke alarm in a room that had no vapor or smoke. 

Above is my TV just after this event occurred. It is always obvious when the Playstation (PS4) turns on, as the whole TV becomes like we see above. Ironically the series Fringe ( on HBO Max)  is about paranormal events. I am certain I did turn off the Playstation -- the PS4 -- first thing in the morning, because two minutes after turning on the power in the morning, I get not the screen shown above, but a different PS4 screen complaining that the power was suddenly turned off (something I do every night), and also because you cannot watch TV in the morning with my setup unless you first turn off the Playstation. At the time the PS4 (Playstation) suddenly turned on, my TV remote was an arm's length away. You can turn on the Playstation with the TV remote, but that requires pressing different TV remote buttons in a particular sequence of about four presses, something that would never occur accidentally (or would occur accidentally with a probability of  less than about 1 in 1000, if you were pressing random buttons on the TV remote). 

It's very hard to capture events like this happening at random intervals. But my page here does show a video I took of a camera taking 300 pictures by itself, while no one was touching it.  And my page here does have a video showing a camera changing its settings when no one touched it. 

Postscript #1 : Speaking of seeing spooky things, a few days after writing the account above (on February 17) I saw a large raven about 15 feet away, on the street. It seemed bigger than any black bird I had ever seen in New York City. 

Postscript #2 (February 28, 2024): The event of the Playstation machine mysteriously turning on by itself occurred again today,  February 28, 2024. About seven minutes after I turned off the Playstation machine, it somehow turned on by itself. The conditions were the same as before: the Playstation controller was two meters away from me, on top of the Playstation, and the TV remote was an arm's length away from me. 

Postscript #3 (February 29, 2024): The event of the Playstation machine mysteriously turning on by itself occurred again today,  February 29, 2024, occurring two hours atter I had turned off the Playstation machine. The conditions were the same as before: the Playstation controller was two meters away from me, on top of the Playstation, and the TV remote was an arm's length away from me.  

Postscript #4 (March 1, 2024):  Another day, another spooky event.  While sitting on a couch watching TV and using my I-Pad today, March 1, 2024, at about noon,  I suddenly heard a very loud electronic noise, sounding several times.  A look at my state-of-the-art smoke detector on the ceiling (the Nest Protect model) showed that it had a blue color in its ring. which it does not normally display. There was no smoke or vapor in the room,  and no one had cooked in it that day, and no one had showered nearby for hours.  According to the Google link here, the Nest Protect will show such a ring (and make loud sounds) if someone presses the button on the detector. But no one pressed such a button.  Below is a still from a video I took when the smoke detector still showed the ring. The link says that the detector will announce that a test is being made if you press the button, but no such verbal announcement occurred.  This detector is powered by an electrical wire connection, and there was no sign of any power fluctuation. 

When Souls Learn What Bodies Could Not Have Learned

 In the video below, we have a remarkable example of what is called a veridical near-death experience. At the 22:09 mark a doctor recalls his "first day as a doctor" on a long shift at a hospital. A second-year resident promised the doctor that he would be with the doctor throughout his long shift. Soon a patient went into cardiac arrest, and the doctor was able to prevent him from dying (the second-year resident being absent). The doctor recalls talking with the patient's wife using rather gloomy language, and eating the patient's lunch (which the patient was too sick to eat). Days later the patient spoke to the doctor, and recalled floating out of his body during his cardiac arrest. The patient scolded the doctor for eating his lunch, and talking to his wife using such gloomy language. The doctor is stunned to hear the patient claim that at the time of his resuscitation from cardiac arrest, the doctor was feeling sorry for himself because the second-year resident did not stay with him as he promised. This was a rather embarrassing thought that the doctor had kept to himself, and had expressed to no one. 

We have here a good example of what is called a veridical out-of-body experience, in which a subject recalls making observations while out of his body which should have been impossible for him to make, given his medical situation at the time. See my post here for many similar cases. 

Orb With a Shadow Stripe

A Spooky Event on My Late Father's Birthday

Today I had a dream that seemed to be a symbolic reference to my deceased father. Very often I get more direct dreams in which my father appears unmistakably in the dream. I have had 129 such dreams since I started recording my dreams in November, 2020. This morning (about two hours ago) after having the dream that may have symbolically referred to my father, I lay in bed thinking about my father. At that instant something spooky happened. I heard a loud "click" sound. The GFCI outlet in my bathroom had suddenly turned off, although there was no one in the bathroom.  This can occur from contact with water or steam or by someone pressing the Test button on the outlet. Other than water at the bottom of the toilet, there was no water or steam in the empty bathroom, which had been unused for more than an hour.  Nothing was plugged in to the outlet. So how could the outlet have shut off?  It was as if some invisible presence had pressed the Test button, at the instant I was thinking about my late father.  After waking up I realized that today is my late father's birthday. 

When I pressed one of the buttons, the outlet turned back on. There was no disturbance in a nearby digital clock, so no power interruption hypothesis can seem to explain the strange event. In the nearly two years I have been living at my current location, I have never observed this outlet shutting off when no one was in the bathroom (although on only one previous day last year I inferred that such a thing had happened).

Orbs With Two Stripes, Part 2

Below are some photos I previously took of double-striped orbs. I will include links to the original posts. All of the photos were taken in clean dry air, and the outdoor photo was taken when there was no fog, mist, rain or precipitation.

Mystery Orbs Should Make Us More Humble

 The US Department of Defense now has an office dedicated to investigating reports of UFOs (or UAP, variously defined as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena or Unidentified Aerial Phenomena). The office is officially called the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office or AARO. Sean Kirkpatrick led the office in 2022 and 2023, but resigned around the end of 2023. Sean has written an article that recently appeared in Scientific American, one entitled "Here's What I Learned as the U.S. Government's UFO Hunter."  PC users will find the article blocked by some annoying popup that demands your email address. I read the article on my I-Pad without having to give my email address, and I will summarize the contents. 

I can start by noting the egotistical-sounding article title.  Sean was the leader of an office with quite a few people, but he has described himself as "the" US government's UFO hunter, as if it was a one-man show. Sean then denounces "today's world of misinformation, conspiracy driven decision-making and sensationalist-dominated governance," and claims that "evidence-based critical thinking is eroding." He claims to "have experienced this erosion up close and personal," and that this was "one factor in my decision to step down from my position." Wow, that sounds quite "holier than thou." But it doesn't really make sense. If there are some people around you not thinking very clearly, why not help things out by staying around and standing up for clear, rational thinking? 

Sean then states, "AARO discovered a few things, and none were about aliens." No, actually, AARO encountered quite a few reports of mysterious anomalies, and we do not understand the cause of such anomalies.  Visiting extraterrestrials is one of the main theories to explain such anomalies. Such a theory has not been ruled out by anything AARO has done. 

Next, Sean makes a strange reference to the AATIP program (an acronym which stands for Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program), a program that is also called the  Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Application Program (AAWSAP).  Sean seemingly tries to make the program sound like something that was about "paranormal research at Skinwalker Ranch in Utah." He says "taxpayer money was inappropriately spent on paranormal research at Skinwalker Ranch in Utah." The truth is that the AATIP program seems to have had no more than a slight involvement in Skinwalker Ranch in Utah. The AATIP program mainly produced reports on a wide variety of futuristic topics. There's nothing in this list about Skinwalker Ranch. So why has Sean attempted to belittle this program by claiming that "taxpayer money was inappropriately spent on paranormal research at Skinwalker Ranch in Utah"? And why would money be inappropriately spent if someone was researching the paranormal at such a location, reputed to be a hotspot for UFO sightings? For the former head of a US UFO office to be thinking that it is inappropriate to investigate the paranormal sounds very strange indeed. Diligent scholars of UFO reports are well aware than such reports have long been entangled with various types of paranormal phenomena such as ESP.  And dramatic UFO reports are typically themselves reports of the paranormal. 

Most of the topics mentioned above are no more outrageous or fringe than many types of research that receive abundant government funding, such as research on the never-observed hypothetical realities called dark energy and dark matter.  Trying to belittle some claim he doesn't believe, Sean strangely tells us "the key purveyors of this narrative have known one another for decades," as if such a claim was important. Sean then tries to create bad impressions about the AATIP program by saying that it worked on "fringe studies."  The word "fringe" is a long-used term of disparagement that no director of a UFO office has any business using. The topics in the list above (and also the topic of UFOs) are no more "fringe" than many research topics the US government lavishly funds, such as the search for dark matter, dark energy, and primordial cosmic inflation.  

Later, Sean makes this statement: "Simply put, 'unidentified' is unacceptable." To the contrary, man's knowledge of nature is fragmentary, and many types of unidentified phenomena have always been an important part of human experience. Any idea that "unidentified" is unacceptable would seem to involve vast overconfidence about the state of human understanding. Later, Sean strangely claims that UFO research is "data poor." To the contrary, organizations such as MUFON have tons of data about UFO sightings.   

For example, one of the documents above (" Anomalous Acute and Subacute Field Effects on Human Biological Tissues") has the following interesting data-rich table in an appendix, listing effects reported in UFO encounters:

Sean's article is centered around his grievances against some people he seems very annoyed by, and he seems more interested in talking about his grievances against such people than shedding light on the topic of unidentified aerial phenomena. Sean's article has a  "UFO researchers should not taint themselves" ring to it, with the idea perhaps being that there must be no mingling with things that NASA materialists might disapprove of.  That does not make sense, because UFO reports are thoroughly entangled with psychic phenomena,  as I discuss in my posts here and here. A good attitude for the leader of some government office having the task of investigating UFO reports would be: fearlessly collect and analyze observations, and make whatever conclusions are justified by them, no matter how much that may offend the easily-offended ears of today's experts. 

Here are quotes that Sean made in a public hearing:

"Sean Kirkpatrick: "The vast majority of what has been reported and what we have data on, a little less than half now, are orbs, round spheres."

"Sean Kirkpatrick:  "This is a spherical orb metallic in the Middle East 2022 by an MQ-9. I will come back to the sensor question that David raised here in a moment. This is a typical example of the thing that we see most of. We see these all over the world and we see these in making very interesting apparent maneuvers."

Such puzzling anomalies should teach us great humility, but I think Sean failed to learn the lesson. "Unidentified is unacceptable" is not something suggesting humility before the countless mysteries of reality.
