I took the photos below while photographing only ordinary drops of pure, clean water falling in front of a black featureless background. On this day I got a spectacular series of 1000 photos showing orbs with four holes, some of which can be seen in this post. But I also got a fairly long series showing orbs with only three holes. One such photo is below.
