The Washington Post recently said this about flying orbs: "In some cases, pilots—many of whom are engineers and academy graduates—claimed to observe small spherical objects flying in formation." This is probably a reference to sightings in recent years. It is known that quite a few World War II pilots reported mysterious balls of light near their planes. They were called "foo fighters." A web page says, "Toward the end of World War II pilots began reporting seeing UFOs - Unidentified Flying Objects - in the shape of strange glowing balls flying around their aircraft at night."
