According to the Farmer's Almanac page here, "It is common folklore that a visit from a cardinal represents a sign from a loved one who has passed." Twice in the past few days I've seen a cardinal in the tree in the front yard of the house where I live. I only rarely see these birds in the city I live. The one below seemed to long linger in the tree this morning.
Postscript: A few days after publishing this post (on March 18) I again saw a cardinal in the tree in the front yard of the house where I live, with the bird arriving at the very instant I looked out the window. I only look out at the tree for a few seconds per day, which makes the sighting of three cardinals this month in this tree very remarkable, particularly since in three previous years I never saw a cardinal in the tree.
