A Two-Part Orb Pattern

I took the photos below while photographing only ordinary drops of pure, clean water falling in front of a black featureless background. We see a two-part pattern consisting of a large hole on the right and a small circle on the left.
Either before or after this pattern, there was a simpler pattern consisting of only the hole on the right. Below are some examples.
