Orb Crescents Display Radial Symmetry

Photo date: July 23, 2015. Photographer: Mark Mahin.

The photo below was taken while photographing drops of pure, clean water falling against a dark background.  We see the strange things I call orb crescents. If you look closely, you can see an astonishing pattern in the crescents. The round side of each crescent is facing away from the center, which has no crescents. This is a pattern called radial symmetry. You see the same pattern made by orange wedges if you cut an orange in half , except that in that case the round part of each wedge is facing away from the center of the orange, and in this case the round part of each crescent is pointed toward the center.

I saw the same thing on April 6, 2015 (as noted in a previous post). Below is the photo taken on that day.  Again, we see radial symmetry.

We basically have two wonders here: the very appearance of these crescents (which should not even be showing up in photos of ordinary water drops), and their arrangement in a pattern showing radial symmetry (something extremely unlikely to occur by chance).
