I took the photos below while photographing only ordinary drops of pure, clean water falling in front of a black featureless background. On this day one of several repeating patterns I got was one consisting simply of a large hole on the left side of each orb. Over the course of some 400 photos, I got thousands of orbs with such a hole, always on the left side.
