Big Orbs Loom Large in the Sky

Photo date: August 5, 2015. Photographer: Mark Mahin.

The photo below was taken in New York City, and shows two large orbs floating near a building. The largest one is about 9 percent of the original photo height.

There was no fog, mist, rain, or precipitation on this night. The air quality listed on airnow.gov was good. On a night like this, particles of dust in the air have a size of only about 1 micron -- only enough to block 1/15,000 (one fifteen thousandth) of the area directly in front of a camera lens (about 15 millimeters, or 15,000 microns). But here we see a blockage fraction 1000 times greater than that -- 9 percent of the original  photo height.
