A Row of "Shadow Figures" at the Back of the Dense Horde

The photo below was taken in Grand Central Terminal in New York, on a day in which it was unusually packed because of a service outage.
At the back of the crowd, we see something strange. There seems to be a row of what looks like shadow figures that form a big black line in the middle of the closeup below. Or was it just a weird coincidence caused by everyone in this row wearing black?
