Below is a composite photo showing two shots taken of the Helmsley Building on Park Avenue in New York City. You can clearly see they were taken at about the same time (as the arrangement of man-made lights is identical). The left photo shows a large bright orb not seen in the right photo. This was not the moon, which was merely the thinnest of crescents on this night.
There was no fog, mist, rain or precipitation on this night. The air quality listed on airnow.gov was "good," with a rating of 33.
