The photo below was taken at the Stephen Schwartzman branch of the New York Public Library, and shows an example of the strange effect I call the light metamorphosis, in which light rays seem to get enormously amplified. We see a woman walking up a stairway, and it looks almost as if she is walking toward a fate of incineration by those laser-like beams. I am reminded of the climactic scene at the end of Wagner's Ring Cycle, in which Brunhilda rides her horse into the flames.
The photo was a non-flash with an exposure of only .74 second.
