An Uncanny Beam of Light at the Spot of an Untimely Death

Photo date: April 4, 2015.  Photographer: Mark Mahin.

While walking I came to a spot where I knew that a young woman had suffered a most sudden and tragic death. I knew the spot because of the flowers that were long placed at the spot. I took a photo of the spot.

When I looked at my photo, I saw a purple glow, but I thought nothing of that, because the sun was low in the sky, and that can sometimes  cause a purple glow in a photo. But then I noticed something more. There was a beam of golden light stretching across much of the photo. The photo is shown below.

Below is a closeup of part of the beam of light. See how it is evenly split into two parts. What also seems astonishing is the narrowness of the beam -- it looks almost like a laser beam. I've seen photos of shafts of light coming through a gap in a forest, but they look much more diffuse than this beam, which has distinct edges.

This might not be too amazing if the beam of light was coming from the same direction as the sun. But as you can pretty much tell from the top photo, it was not coming from that direction. It was coming from a direction 90 degrees away from the sun.
