Eclipse of the Giant Orb

Photo date: May 3, 2015. Photographer: Mark Mahin.

On this night I again encountered a very large purple orb -- not as bright as previously reported, but with an interesting new variation.

After taking quite a few pictures on this night, I first got a large purple orb in the shot below taken at 8:47 PM. The location was a very dark location, so there seemed no possibility that lens flare could be the cause. The entire photo is shown below, with the orb on the left.  The orb is about 66% of the total photo height. (I used the IrfanView "auto-adjust colors" menu option on this photo.)

A photo taken the next minute (at 8:48) showed the same purple orb on the left, but with a yellow orb in front of it.  The photo below is exactly as uploaded from the camera.

A photo taken a minute later (at 8:49) showed no sign of anything unusual, which shows that no camera malfunction or lens smudge was involved.

A photo also taken at 8:49 (but after the previous photo) shows the same purple orb on the left, again with another orb in front of it.  (I used the IrfanView "auto-adjust colors" menu option on this photo.)

A photo taken at 8:50 again shows no sign of the orb.

A photo taken at 8:52 shows the big purple orb back again on the left of the photo, again with another orb in front of it. (I used the IrfanView "auto-adjust colors" menu option on this photo.)

Below is a closeup of part of the left of the photo above. The very large purple orb seems to be behind the yellowish orb, and also behind part of the church building.

But a photo taken four minutes later (at 8:56) again shows no sign of the orb. Below is the full photo.

The sequence of photos shown here is similar to the sequence of photos I have shown in other posts labeled "giant purple air orb," although in some of those posts the orb was much brighter.  The sequence has the benefit of showing items in front of the purple orb, which helps to rule out various natural explanations for it.
