The Brightest "Teardrops"

The photo below was taken while photographing ordinary drops of pure, clean water falling against a dark featureless background.  We see a strange cluster of teardrop-shaped objects. I've taken innumerable photos of falling water drops, and I cannot recall previously seeing such a shape.
