Inexplicable Camera Whiteout, Except for the "Pink Butterfly"

The photo below was taken while photographing ordinary drops of pure, clean water falling against a dark featureless background.  My camera was not zoomed in, and the photo below should have showed water drops and the dark background -- or at least the dark background (about seven inches from my camera).  Very strangely a mysterious glow of light seemed to fill the photo, leaving the photo as almost nothing but whiteness. The previous and next photos (from the same position, with my camera on a stable platform) showed no such anomaly.

Below is the full original photo (the only thing you can see is a little bit of pinkness on the right).

I tried cropping the corner of the photo, and using the IrfanView "Auto-adjust colors" menu option on the cropped image. What I got was the strange image below. The one on the left looks like a pink butterfly.

The butterfly is a symbol of resurrection.
